BARANGAY HISTORY

The name POLO came from the word “PULO” which means an island. This was according to some Bla’an who were the pioneers of this place because according to them before the eruption of Mt. Matutum this place was surrounded with water. Upper Klinan was a part of Sarangani Bay but then Mt. Matutum erupted and mudflow covered the water extending the part of this island.

Life is hard in this place, before only very few people wanted to live here because water was very far. Some people survived by getting some water from a tree called “GUIMIT”. Water was abundant only during rainy days. During summer, people get water from the stream three kilometers away using a carabao cart. Nevertheless, despite the lack of water and transportation, people from Visayas came here looking for a greener pasture.

Barrio Polo was founded in November 28,1952 through the leadership of the late Barrio Lieutenant Carlos Balajadia, the pioneer of this place. The people put up a two-teacher school combining Grades I & II and Grades III & IV. They also put up a small chapel for them to gather during Sunday for worship. Little by little, the barangay population increased and life seemed to improve.

In 1965, foreign investors came to build Dole, Philippines. The Barangay Captain at that time was Prudencio Espital, Sr. Life improved and employment begun, water system was put up by the company, roads were improved and transportation became easy. However, the rice and corn farm turned into a great pineapple plantation. The trees were also cut off and the fertile soil eroded. Nevertheless, Barangay Polo has much improved from what it was years ago.
